SPRINKLER SYSTEMS
SPRINKLER SYSTEMS
Fire Risk International will design, install, test and commission a sprinkler system as part of a risk mediation program for the premises. These systems are legally compliant, effective, and subject to regular inspection and maintenance.
A sprinkler system often forms the only means of detecting and controlling or extinguishing a fire. Traditionally, sprinkler systems were basic installations connected to town main water supplies and operating on a purely pressure differential basis. Technology has advanced with various innovative solutions to the obstacles faced and limitations of sprinkler systems, but in essence the operating principles remain the same.
Due to the crumbling infrastructure in South African towns and cities the supply of reliable flows and pressures from town main water supplies have become very suspect. As a result it is often required that clients install a water tank reservoir system on their premises as part of the sprinkler system. This ensures that there is a minimum of 90 minutes water supply to the system and this is deemed to be sufficient in order to control a fire.
However, sprinkler systems are expensive, and even more so when supported by a system of tanks and pumps to augment the water supply and ensure effective operations. In many cases there is no alternative to the installation of a sprinkler system as part of a new building, but in such cases the cost of the system can become a part of the project.
It is in the case of older buildings which are being re-purposed where the cost of installing a sprinkler system becomes prohibitive. In such cases Fire Risk International has the skills, knowledge and experience to look at alternatives to such systems.
